yikes

What was my last update? I can’t even remember.

I worked like crazy all weekend. I got both Captain Marvel and Leia 95% finished.

The only thing I need to do on Captain Marvel is finish my brooch (I’ve got the pieces made, just need to glue them together and paint them) and the gloves. after making the gloves for Leia I just was NOT feeling having to make another pair, so I bought some. Hopefully they match well enough. Once they get here, I’ll just need to attach my glove cuffs to them.

Here’s my Leia wig before and after:

It went together pretty quickly. The wefts are showing pretty badly in the back though. I’m going to put it on with a brown wig-cap and see if it just blends in… if it looks even remotely OK I’m leaving it. If it looks terrible I have some loose wefts I can sew in.
I got the patches made for the suit, got them attached and the legs and arms onto the suit. It’s all done! All I have left is Chase fixing the belt for me so it fits. I didn’t take pics of it yet.

Sunday was going to be my repair day and I started out by tackling the french hood I wanted to make for my Anne costume. Not that I don’t love my crown, but I wanted the hood, too. I saved the scraps from last year so I could make this, and my millinery wire came in last week so I was excited to tackle it. It ended up taking all day! But I got it mostly finished – I need to finish the edges on the back and find fabric for a veil.

I also really just kinda had to make it up as I went, because all I had for reference was a couple of blurry screenshots. But I think it’s pretty.

So Sunday while doing all this hand-sewing I noticed my thumbnail cuticle was irritated. No big deal, it happens frequently enough. I slapped a bandaid on it just so that my little scissors wouldn’t irritate it further (my little scissors’ handle sits right there). Went to bed that night and woke up at 2AM with my whole arm aching. I went to take some ibuprofen and in the light saw a red line streaking from my thumb nearly to my elbow – that hadn’t been there when I went to bed. Yikes! I knew that was an infection. I called up my aunt & Kristie and asked them what I should do. They said don’t wait, go to the ER. They met us there and stayed with us which I can’t thank them enough for.

Waited about an hour for the doc, who came and and immediately recognized it as a common infection of the nailbed. He did an xray to make sure everything was cool… and then had to lance the area underneath my nail that was swollen to get the pus out D: D: D: OMG IT HURT. (He couldn’t numb it without doing a total digit block which he said would have hurt even more than just lancing it quickly.) Gave me RXs and thankfully sent me home (there was some thought it might require IV antibiotics.)

I’m utterly terrified at what the bill is going to be since my insurance is utter crap. 🙁

So I’ve been at home sleeping on the couch for two days. Not sure if I’ve been knocked out because of my body fighting the infection or because of the pain meds (or a combination!). Haven’t been able to work on much as obviously my right hand/arm have been swollen and aching and my thumb HURTS. I did manage to make my Donna necklace tho:

And last night I stumbled into my office, dug through some patterns, and cut out a mockup of my pink dress.

I was going to use this simplified georgian pattern I had but I decided I didn’t like it after looking at it. I wanted to do the pleated back which the other pattern didn’t have. Of course I’d bought all my fabric based on that pattern. The other pattern I decided to use (same as my 2011 Marie Antoinette) needed more fabric. I managed to squeeze this out of 5.5 yds of lining. I have 5 yds of my velvet – I’m going to have to pony up for a couple more but thankfully I just got my July bonus so I have a little money to play with.
